Gibson named NESCAC Performer of the Week after record jump

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College sophomore James Gibson (Solon, Ohio), after breaking a 49-year-old school record in the long jump, was honored as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men's Track and Field Performer of the Week in field events.

Gibson is now tied for seventh in NCAA Division III after leaping 23-feet, 8-inches at Saturday's Penmen Relays at Southern New Hampshire University. He broke the old Colby record of 23-6 set in 1969 by Rodney Braithwaite.
Despite less than ideal weather on a cold Saturday, Gibson had his record-breaking leap on the first jump of the day. He passed on his other attempts and easily won the event.
Gibson and the Mules are heading into the championship portion of the season starting this Saturday with the Maine State Championships at Bates College. The NESCAC meet is at Trinity College on April 28 and the New England Division III meet is May 5 at MIT.
Gibson placed fourth in the long jump at the conference meet last year and 10th in the event at the New England meet. Gibson also competes in the triple jump and high jump.
