Softball sweeps double header against Presque Isle behind Holton's pitching and team offense

WATERVILLE, Maine -- In a clash of Maine colleges, Colby softball swept Sunday's double header against the University of Maine Presque Isle.

Game one highlighted the Mules resiliency. Down 3-0 early, the Mules' bats erupted in the 5th inning. Laura Powell, who finished the game with two hits, a run, and an RBI, drove in the Mules first run with a double to right center field. That offense proved to be the catalyst Colby needed, as the Mules batted around and scored five more runs before the inning ended. Holly Lallis and Maeve Devlin added RBI's in the inning to help Colby go up 6-3. That would be all the they needed. Wiley Holton pitched a complete game for the win, tallying three strikeouts, and the Mules defense held Presque Isle scoreless for the remaineder of the game to win 6-3.

Holton started the second game against the Owls, as well, striking out three and giving up two runs in five innings. It would be more than enough for the Mules. Lolo Niemiec and Haily Rohall started the second inning with back to back doubles to give Colby their first run of the game. Paige Hartnett followed with a single and Carly Swartz tripled to give the Mules a 3-0 lead they would never relinquish. Holly Lallis pitched the final two innings for the save and Colby won 3-2. The wins improve Colby's record to 4-13.

In response to the day's success, coach Terren Allen said, "Today's wins demonstrated a huge step forward for our team and program. Since our return from Florida we have improved in many areas of our game and continue to push forward in a positive direction. We are eager to keep the momentum moving forward for our next set of games against Bowdoin and University of Maine Farmington."

The Mules next play Bowdoin College. The game is scheduled for April 12 at 4:00 pm (EST).
