Niemiec homers, drives in four, in back and forth battle with Bowdoin

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Softball completed its season series against Bowdoin College this weekend with a Friday game followed by a double header on Saturday. Each game was a close contest, but the Mules fell in all three.

Pitchers dominated to start game one as Colby starter Lucie Cunningham and Bowdoin pitcher Samantha Roy each carried no-hitters into the 5th inning. Bowdoin's offense came to life in the 5th, however, and, combined with some untimely errors by Colby's defense, the Polar Bears tacked on seven runs in the inning, though only two were earned. A run by Colby senior Holly Lallis in the sixth was not enough, and the Mules lost game one, 8-1.

The Mules came out fast in game two, taking an early 1-0 lead when Lolo Niemiec doubled in Ashley Ketchum. Wiley Holton pitched solidly, and after Holly Lallis's RBI double in the fourth and Lolo Niemiec's sacrifice fly in the fifth, the game stood almost even at 4-3 in Bowdoin's favor. Bowdoin erupted for five runs in the 7th inning, however, and the Mules could not come back. Colby also received offensive sparks from Paige Bober, Emily Dougherty, Hailey Rohall, and Wiley Holton.

Game three proved to be a back and forth battle between the Polar Bears and the Mules. Colby came back from an early two run deficit when Lolo Niemiec launched her first collegiate home run off of the scoreboard in the first inning, driving in two. The Mules generated more offense in the second on a Bowdoin throwing error and after Hailey Rohall's RBI double in the third, Colby led 5-2, but the Polar Bears answered in the fourth on Andrea Dorsa's two-run home run to shrink the Mules' lead to 5-4. Colby responded, however, on Paige Bober's RBI single, scoring Holly Lallis. Carly Swartz then scored on a wild pitch and after four innings, Colby held a 7-4 lead. The game was all Bowdoin after that, though. The Polar Bears chipped away at Colby's advantage, tying the game in the sixth at seven runs apiece before taking an 8-7 lead in the seventh. Despite a strong combined pitching performance by Cunningham, Lallis, and Holton, as well as some seventh inning base runners, the Mules could not come all the way back and fell to Bowdoin 8-7 in the third game of the series.

The Mules next take the field for a double header at home against University of Maine Farmington on Sunday, starting at 1:00PM (EST).
