WATERVILLE, Maine – Colby softball hosted Thomas College for a double header in a clash of neighboring colleges on Wednesday afternoon.
The Mules got on the board first in game one when Ashley Ketchum scored on Hailey Rohall's single. Emily Dougherty's single scored Laura Powell on the next play, and Colby took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. That would be the only offense for the Mules, however. Holly Lallis pitched a solid complete game for Colby, giving up five runs over seven innings to the visiting Terriers, but the effort was not enough, and the Mules lost game one 5-2.
The Terriers struck first in game two, jumping to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off of Colby pitcher Lucie Cunningham. Thomas took a 5-0 lead after scoring twice in the third, but the Mules quickly responded. In the bottom of the inning, Holly Lallis scored Colby's first run on Paige Bober's bases loaded, RBI single. Ashley Ketchum scored on the next play when Lolo Niemiec grounded out to second base, and Emily Dougherty singled in Laura Powell to bring the Mules to within two runs. The game was a turbulent affair. In the top half of the fourth, Thomas tacked on another run off of relief pitcher Wiley Holton, then added two more in the sixth to take a commanding 8-3 lead. Colby nearly came back. Paige Hartnett, who went 3-3 at the plate, hit her first home run of the season, a two-run blast, in the bottom of the sixth inning. In the seventh, Colby had runners on second and third with one out, but could drive them in and lost 8-5.
Colby next travels to Tufts for their season series with the Jumbos, which starts on Thursday at 4:30 PM (EST).
