Waterville, Maine - The Colby College Women's Soccer team held tight in overtime to preserve the shut out and end the season with a 0-0 tie versus Bates College on Tuesday afternoon.
While both teams battled for possession and pressure opportunities, this was a tale of two keepers. Shannon Gray (headline photo) entered the contest ranked second in the conference in saves with 64. The person ahead of her was none other than her opponent, Bobcat Katherine Nuckols, who entered today's match with 65. Both goalies played through regulation and two overtimes denying everything they saw. In the end, Gray tallied six saves to five for Nuckols, and the two ladies sit tied for first in the NESCAC with 70 saves on the season.
The Mules led in shots during the first and second halves 12-6, led by two each from Charlotte White and Maddie Fisher (photo inset). In overtime, Bates took over and applied pressure with four shots in the first overtime and three in the next. Colby was unable to put a shot on goal in either period.
The shutout was the seventh of the year for the Mules, including a 2-0 win over NESCAC opponent Trinity College and 0-0 2OT ties against Bowdoin College, Wesleyan University, and now Bates.
Colby finishes the year with a record of 5-6-3 (1-6-3 in NESCAC play) while Bates finishes at 2-11-2 (0-9-1).
