Women's tennis has more depth as spring season begins

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College women's tennis coach Jason Cohen will have his deepest team this year when the Mules open the spring season Saturday against Franklin Pierce University.

The Mules return the Venditti twins -- Gabriela and Lydia -- for their junior seasons from the top two singles spots and first doubles. Both women had nine singles wins last year and led the team in doubles victories with eight.
The Mules take on Franklin Pierce at 3 p.m. and then meet Hamilton College on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Colby has increased its roster size from eight to 12 this season.
"The larger roster has created some great competition at practice since the team is very deep with talent this year," Cohen said. "I am very confident in our team and excited to see what this season brings."
Gabriela Venditti and senior Maddie Lupone (pictured) are co-captains for the Mules. Lupone also won nine singles matches a year ago. Lupone will play in the middle positions along with first-year Callie Nesbitt and sophomore transfer Jessica Tsai.
Jamie Pine, Aleks Piibe, Emily Dyckman, and Hania Lenderking also return for Colby. First-years Isha Banerjee, Molly Higgins, and Kahler Mabbs should all contribute.
"We have a tough schedule, but I feel we'll have a chance to really surprise some teams this year and avenge some close losses from last season."
