MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – Day one of the women's Division III ITA New England Tournament is complete. Doubles pair Carly Levitz and Crystal Xu have moved on to play tomorrow, taking down Wellesley's Serena Peng and Libby Chang in a tight match (8-7(4)). The duo will play Wesleyan pair Sophia Henderson and Kristina Yu in the second round. Also competing for the Mules in doubles play was pair Callie Nesbitt and Katharine Dougherty, who fell to Sasa Jonanovic and Fleming Landau of Bowdoin, 8-4.
The Mules had three athletes competing in the singles draw. Seeded seventh, Levitz cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Anya Gerasimova of Mt. Holyoke, but fell to Middlebury's Maddi Stow in a third set tie-break, 1-6, 6-4, 10-6. First-year Xu lost a close match to the tournament's top seed, Middlebury's Heather Boehm, 6-4, 6-3. Nesbitt first took on Bates' Anna Rozin, coming out on top after an especially close first set, 7-6 (4), 6-4. Nesbitt would lose her second round match to Maggie Owensby of Amherst, 7-5, 6-2.
