Volleyball has 2-1 weekend

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Karolina Serhan ripped 15 kills for the Colby College volleyball team in helping the Mules to a 3-1 victory over Maine Maritime Academy on Saturday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

The Mules (2-9) made it a 2-0 Saturday with a 3-0 win against St. Joseph's College later in the day. Colby fell 3-0 to Bates on Friday night.

Maine Maritime won the first set by a 25-23 score, but the Mules bounced back for 25-22, 25-23, 25-23 set wins.
Serhan had a solid .345 hitting percentage, added four blocks, and had seven defensive digs for the Mules.
Colby had fine balance among its hitters. Paige Hanssen added eight kills, while Elizabeth Noyes, Nicole Petherbridge, and Alexa Busser all had seven kills.
Molly Manuel finished with 26 assists, Erin Maidman added 18 digs and two aces, and Noyes had 11 digs and three blocks. Mae Sefransky finished with 14 assists, Emily Moslener had 11 assists, Hanssen added 10 digs, and Busser had three blocks.
Gillian O'Neal led the Mariners with 19 kills and teammate Tess Clark had 17 kills. Sydney Adams did a fine job as setter with 50 assists and added two blocks. Clark also had 19 digs and three aces, while O'Neal added 17 digs.
In the St. Joseph's match, Noyes had 10 kills and Manuel dished 22 assists for the Mules in a 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 victory. 
St. Joseph's dropped to 3-6 after losing at home earlier in the day to Lasell.
Serhan added nine kills, Hanssen had eight kills, and Kate Wincek and Busser both had five. The Mules also received 12 assists from Sefransky and nine by Moslener.
Maidman had 27 defensive digs in just three sets for Colby. Busser had a team-best three blocks and Maidman led in aces with three.
The Monks received seven kills and 10 digs from Victoria Huntley. Jennelle Thompson led the way with 17 digs, Jordynne Copp had a match-high five blocks and Shadai Gosselin had six kills. Emma Tirrell paced St. Joseph's with 18 assists.

Bates College scored the final three points of the key second set to earn a 26-24 win on the way to a 3-0 victory Friday.

Bates won by set scores of 25-14, 26-24, 25-17. 

Karolina Serhan had eight kills, added two aces, and hit a solid .333 to lead the Mules. Elizabeth Noyes and Paige Hanssen each had six kills, while Alexa Busser had four kills and one block. Molly Manuel led in assists with 16 and teammate Mae Sefransky added nine. 

The Bobcats trailed 24-23 after Colby won a wild point with numerous outstanding defensive digs from both teams. The Bobcats called timeout and were helped by a Colby service error and a kill from Samantha Schecter in taking the second set.
Bates darted out to 6-1 and 12-3 leads in the final set before Colby bounced back. The Mules cut the lead to 13-9 on an ace by Serhan. The Bobcats never allowed Colby to get closer than four points the rest of the way. Bates led 19-15 and received another kill from Schecter and two winners from Taylor Stafford-Smith.
The Bobcats got off to a fine start in the first set, taking a quick 9-2 lead and extending the margin to 17-7 at one point. The Mules did fight and only trailed 19-14 after an Alexa Busser block. Bates, though, scored the final six points of the set.
