Middlebrook, Hanssen lead volleyball team past Monks, 3-1

STANDISH, Maine -- Elizabeth Middlebrook and Paige Hanssen both had 15 kills in leading the Colby College volleyball team to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Saint Joseph's College on Wednesday night.

The Mules won by set scores 25-22, 25-14, 23-25, 25-16.
By the numbers
* Hanssen had just two attack errors and hit .481 for the match, while Middlebrook finished at .357. Hanssen and Middlebrook also had three service aces apiece.
* Molly Manuel (pictured) had 34 assists, seven digs, and helped out at the net with five kills in five attacks. 
* Julia Hutchings finished with seven kills, a .357 attack percentage, and a match-high five aces to go along with two blocks. Nicole Petherbridge had four kills and hit .273.
Match highlights
* The Monks (2-7 overall) had an 11-9 lead in the first set, but Colby battled back and went ahead 19-17. The set was tied at 22 when the Mules won the final three points, including the set decider on a kill by Hanssen.
* The second set was the most unusual, with the Monks opening up a 6-1 lead. Colby went on an 18-5 scoring run to go up 19-11 on the way to a 25-14 victory.
* The third set was close the entire way and was knotted up at 23-23 when the Monks called timeout. St. Joseph's scored the final two points to send the match to a fourth set.
* The Mules took control at 5-1 and led 17-8 at one point in the final set. Middlebrook had an ace to give Colby a 23-13 lead.

The Mules (3-5 overall) will play at Bates College in a NESCAC match Friday at 7 p.m.
