Gorman named NESCAC Performer of the Week for second time

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Sophia Gorman (Charlotte, Vt.), who placed third at the NCAA Division III New England Region Championships, was honored Monday as the New England Small College Athletic Conference Performer of the Week.

Gorman earned the honor for the second time this season. She won the NESCAC title two weeks ago at Boston's Franklin Park.

Gorman also was first among NESCAC runners at the regional meet with a time of 21 minutes, 22.91 seconds over the 6-kilometer course. She earned All-New England honors and will run at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships this Saturday in Wisconsin.

Gorman has finished just ahead of Tufts University runner Natalie Bettez and Middlebury College's Rory Kelly in both championship races. Bettez pushed Gorman in Saturday's race.

"Natalie got very close to me and I honestly thought she might pass me," Gorman said. "I didn't want to give up, but this late in the season I don't have much extra to give at the end of the race. It can be frustrating to feel your fitness start to deteriorate, but it's also a sign of a solid season and lots of work. So that feeling of being on empty is both good and bad."

Gorman will race in the NCAA meet for the first time along with All-New England teammate Helen Chavey at the Lake Breeze Golf Club in Winneconne, Wis. Eli Decker, who also earned All-New England honors, will race for the Colby men at nationals.
